What You Should Bring To Your Chronic Pain Clinic Visit

Posted on

If you have a chronic pain issue that you want to be resolved and are considering seeing a professional at a medical clinic, then there are some essential things that you will need to bring with you to your visit. Keep reading to learn about a few of these items.

Prescription List

If you are currently taking medication for your pain condition, then you will need to inform the professional at the medical clinic of this. There are several reasons for this. This will help the physician to understand what types of medicines that are or are not currently eliminating your pain. If the medicines are not working, then you should write down how much of the medicine you typically take, how often you take it, whether it works to reduce pain at all, and how long you have been using the medicine. This will help to gauge whether or not a stronger dose of the medicine is needed or whether or not a different medicine may work better for you.

Also, if you are taking a medicine currently and continue to do so, the physician will want to prescribe additional medicines only if they do not interact with the first one. For example, two NSAID medications should not be taken together. However, an NSAID can be taken with a narcotic pain reliever.

Medication lists are a good idea as well because they allow the clinic professional to see if there are any errors in your prescriptions. This may be one reason why you are still experiencing pain. In addition to pain medicines, other medications along with vitamins and supplements should be listed too. Supplements can actually cause some pain symptoms or even relieve them in some cases, so your doctor will want to know if these types of things are hurting or helping your condition.

Things That Reduce Your Pain

There are many ways to treat pain, and while pain relievers are often part of the pain reduction treatment, they are sometimes not the only thing that can keep pain at bay. So, make sure that you list the things that help to relieve your discomfort. These things can often be added to a treatment regimen. For example, if gentle massage reduces discomfort, then your treatment may involve occupational or physical therapy.

Therapy and other types of non-traditional pain management are now being considered more and more by professionals due to the risks associated with narcotic pain relievers. Even if you cannot identify any activities that reduce your discomfort, think about creating a list of things that you are willing to try to reduce your pain. Chiropractic care, stress reduction, and massage are just a few examples.
